Opening Bank Account

According to a general rule in the Danish legislation, any person has the right to open a basic bank account and it is free of charge. A letter of introduction from HR department is recommended for opening an account. Banks are normally open from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, except on Thursdays, when most banks are open until 5pm or 5:30pm. The national currency is the Danish Krone (DKK). When opening a bank account, you can ask for a “Dankort”. It is a debit card which can be used to withdraw money from ATM machines and it can be used for almost any purchase. The majority of shops, bars, restaurants, cafesrestaurants cafes, supermarkets and service providers accept “Dankort”.

Main Banks

The main banks in Denmark are Danske Bank, Nordea Bank and Jyske Bank. The only one having a net bank in English Language is Danske Bank. To open an account, we recommend you contact one of the below branches as they are familiar with issues related to International Staff working in Denmark.

SOME ADDITIONAL & IMPORTANT CONCEPTS: 

Mobile Payments

Mobile payment solutions are also widely used in Denmark. For example, Danske Bank has a solution called MobilePay and Nordea has a solution called Swipp. Please consult your bank for more information about the solutions offered. 

 

Mit ID 

Through your bank, you will be issued with a Mit ID which entitles you to access banking online. In order to have access to other public authorities in Denmark, you should contact your local municipality (Borgerservice) in order to have the Mit ID activated. 

Bills Payments

It is also a good idea to set up automatic payments via a Betalingsservice/PBS, for regular bills such as rent, utilities, TV, internet, etc. Through this service, you give authorization to your bank to debit your account directly. Using this service, you will save payment fees that can be as high as 35DKK per bill. This can be set up via your online banking. 

E-Boks

When you want to share legal documents with your bank or receive an official legal document, its done through E-Boks. You need to create an account
